Truth and Falsity in Buridan’s Bridge

چکیده
This paper revisits Buridan’s Bridge paradox (Sophismata, chapter 8, Sophism 17), itself close kin to the Liar paradox, a version of which also appears in Bradwardine’s Insolubilia. Prompted by occurrence Cervantes’s Don Quixote, I discuss and compare four distinct solutions problem, namely “just false” conception, “contingently true/false” theory, “both true view, then “neither simpliciter nor false simpliciter” account proposed more recently Jacquette. All have common accept that expresses truth-apt proposition, but only latter three endorse transparency truth. Against some previous commentaries first show solution is fully compliant with an within classical logic. argue insights, as well Jacquette’s treatment, are both supportive dialetheist account, particular strict-tolerant defend intuitions (whether LP or ST guise) against two objections: one concerning future, other alleged simplicity compared Liar.

Aggregating Truth and Falsity Values
We propose an axiom set for the aggregation of truth values, which leads to the characterization of two truth-aggregation families, a prudent and an enthusiastic. The first one has a cautious attitude choosing between two observed values the one which is more uncertain. The second one has an enthusiastic behavior and will reinforce the result if it observes twice the truth or twice the falsity....
متن کاملDegrees of Truth, Degrees of Falsity
In this paper I recall the reasons in favour of extending the classical conception of truth to include degrees of truth as well as truth value gaps and gluts, then provide a sketch of a new system of logic that provides all of these simultaneously. Despite its power, the resulting system is quite simple, combining degrees of truth and degrees of falsity to provide a very flexible and elegant co...
متن کاملOn an Alleged Truth/falsity Asymmetry in Context Shifting Experiments
Keith DeRose has argued that context shifting experiments should be designed in a specific way in order to accommodate what he calls a 'truth/falsity asymmetry'. I explain and critique DeRose's reasons for proposing this modification to contextualist methodology, drawing on recent experimental studies of DeRose's bank cases as well as experimental findings about the verification of affirmative ...
متن کاملthe assessment of truth and falsity in literary propositions
one of the main subjects of rhetoric is assigning the truth and falsity of declarative sentences. if a proposition may be assessed as a truth or falsity, it will be considered as a declarative sentence, otherwise it will be compositional. there were some theologians and philosophers who brought up the discussion of truth and untruth of declaration for the first. although all literal proposition...
متن کاملPCTL model checking of Markov chains: Truth and falsity as winning strategies in games
Probabilisticmodel checking is a technique for verifyingwhether amodel such as aMarkov chain satisfies a probabilistic, behavioral property – e.g. ‘‘with probability at least 0.999, a device will be elected leader’’. Such properties are expressible in probabilistic temporal logics, e.g. PCTL, and efficient algorithms exist for checking whether these formulae are true or false on finite-state mo...
